C12-13 Pareth-23 is a synthetic surfactant derived from petroleum-derived paraffin oils combined with ethylene oxide. It belongs to a class of ingredients called alkyl ethoxylates, which are widely used in cosmetic formulations.In skincare products, it functions as a cleanser and emulsifier—helping to lift oils and impurities from the skin surface, and allowing water and oil-based ingredients to mix smoothly together in formulations.

Surfactants like C12-13 Pareth-23 have a dual nature—one end attracts water, the other attracts oil. This allows them to surround dirt and sebum, suspending these particles so they can be rinsed away with water. In leave-on formulations, they help bind different ingredient types together.

C12-13 Pareth-23 is typically used in rinse-off cleansers or emulsified serums. Since it is a cleansing agent, it works best when formulated as part of a product that will be washed away. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, patch test any new cleanser before full application.

Generally well-tolerated at typical cosmetic concentrations. Isolated case reports of contact dermatitis exist, though reactions appear uncommon. Discontinue use if irritation develops.
