C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside is a mild surfactant derived from natural sources—typically glucose and fatty alcohols from plant oils. It belongs to the glucoside family of cleansing agents, which are gentler alternatives to conventional sulphate-based surfactants.In skincare formulations, it primarily functions as a cleansing agent and emulsifier, helping to remove oil and impurities from the skin whilst also stabilising mixtures of water and oil-based ingredients. It appears in roughly 0.7% of skincare products, most commonly in cleansers and micellar waters.

As a surfactant, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside has a molecular structure with both water-loving and oil-loving ends. This allows it to surround oil droplets and dirt particles, suspending them in water so they can be rinsed away. It does this whilst maintaining a relatively neutral interaction with the skin, reducing the risk of over-drying.When used as an emulsifier, it stabilises the boundary between oil and water phases in a formula, preventing separation and ensuring a consistent texture and performance.

C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside is typically used in rinse-off products such as cleansers and micellar waters, where it is diluted and washed away. It is not usually a leave-on ingredient. When using a cleanser containing this ingredient, apply to damp skin, massage gently, and rinse thoroughly with water. No special timing or frequency adjustment is needed beyond normal cleansing habits.

C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside is generally well-tolerated and considered a mild, skin-safe surfactant. It is unlikely to cause irritation for most people, though those with very reactive or fragile skin barriers may wish to patch test first.
