What Is Cannabigerol?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa plants. Unlike its more well-known relative CBD, CBG is present in smaller quantities and is often considered a precursor to other cannabinoids during plant development. In skincare formulations, CBG is used for its reported skin-conditioning properties.

CBG functions primarily through interaction with the skin's endocannabinoid system and via direct antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory pathways. It does not produce psychoactive effects and is non-intoxicating.

How It Works

CBG is thought to work through multiple mechanisms. It demonstrates antimicrobial activity against planktonic bacteria and biofilms at measurable concentrations, and can inhibit bacterial adhesion to skin cells. Additionally, CBG appears to modulate inflammatory pathways and vascular responses in the skin, which may explain its potential benefit in conditions characterised by redness and abnormal inflammation.

The ingredient also appears to interact with the skin's endocannabinoid system, a regulatory network involved in barrier function, immune response, and skin homeostasis. However, the precise mechanisms in human skin remain an area of ongoing research.

Clinical Evidence & References

Limited but emerging evidence suggests CBG may be beneficial in specific skin concerns. A small clinical study found that topical CBG, when combined with CBD, improved skin biophysical parameters in patients with atopic dermatitis and helped prevent flares. Preliminary research in animal models suggests CBG may reduce erythema and epidermal thickening in rosacea-like inflammation.

Laboratory studies confirm CBG's antimicrobial activity against several skin-relevant bacteria. However, human clinical studies remain scarce, and most evidence comes from in vitro work or small patient cohorts. Further investigation in larger populations is needed to establish efficacy and optimal concentrations for specific skin concerns.

How to Use

CBG is typically found in combination products rather than as a single active. Apply formulations containing CBG as directed on the product label, usually once or twice daily. Since many CBG products combine this ingredient with others like CBD, follow the usage guidance provided by the formulation to avoid overuse. Allow several weeks of consistent use before assessing efficacy, as with most active ingredients.

Safety & Precautions

CBG is generally well-tolerated and non-irritating in topical formulations. As a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, it carries no risk of intoxication. However, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications that interact with cannabinoids, consult a healthcare professional before use.
