Caprooyl Phytosphingosine is a synthetic lipid derived from phytosphingosine, a naturally occurring ceramide-like compound found in plant sources. It combines a long-chain fatty acid (caproic acid) with phytosphingosine to create a molecule designed to condition and hydrate both skin and hair.This ingredient functions as an occlusive and humectant, helping to bind moisture to the skin's surface and support the integrity of the skin barrier. It is found in a relatively small proportion of skincare formulations, typically at low concentrations.

Caprooyl Phytosphingosine works primarily through two mechanisms. As an occlusive, it sits on the skin's surface and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), trapping moisture that would otherwise evaporate. This is particularly useful in dry or compromised skin barrier conditions.The phytosphingosine component also mimics natural ceramides in the skin, which are essential lipids that help maintain barrier function. By supplying a ceramide-like structure, this ingredient may help restore the lipid balance of the stratum corneum — the skin's outermost protective layer.
