What Is Cape Aloe?
Cape aloe is an extract derived from Aloe ferox, a succulent plant native to South Africa. Like other aloe species, it contains a complex mixture of polysaccharides, amino acids, and other compounds that have been used in traditional medicine for generations, particularly within South African communities for treating various skin conditions.
In skincare formulations, cape aloe functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent, helping to maintain skin hydration and support the skin's natural barrier function.
How It Works
Cape aloe appears to work through multiple mechanisms. The polysaccharides and other bioactive compounds it contains may stimulate the production and expression of adhesion molecules on skin cells — these act like cellular 'hooks' that help cells stick together and migrate more effectively during the healing process.
It also appears to have hydrating properties that help the skin retain moisture, which can support barrier function and overall skin resilience.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and clinical research on aloe species, including cape aloe extract, suggests beneficial effects on wound healing and skin cell behaviour. Studies have shown that cape aloe can improve healing responses in human skin cell models and promote increased expression of integrin and adhesion proteins important for cell migration.
However, most research to date has been conducted in controlled laboratory settings or on skin equivalents rather than extensive human clinical trials. Whilst the traditional use of cape aloe in South African communities is well-documented, more human clinical data would help establish its efficacy in contemporary skincare products at typical formulation concentrations.

How to Use
Cape aloe is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and targeted treatment products. As with any skincare ingredient, consistency matters more than concentration — using the product regularly as directed will yield better results than sporadic application. If you have particularly reactive skin, patch test first, as individual sensitivity varies.
