What Is Cetyl Tranexamate Mesylate?
Cetyl tranexamate mesylate is a stabilised derivative of tranexamic acid, an amino acid compound originally developed for medical use. In skincare, it functions as a skin-conditioning agent with a specific focus on pigmentation and inflammation concerns.
This ingredient is formulated into topical products—typically serums—where it works at the skin's surface to target melanin production and inflammatory responses associated with sun damage and persistent discolouration.
How It Works
Cetyl tranexamate mesylate is thought to work by modulating melanin production—the pigment responsible for skin colour—whilst simultaneously addressing inflammation. The ingredient's stabilised structure allows it to remain effective when formulated into skincare products.
The mechanism is distinct from traditional bleaching agents, instead targeting the biological processes that lead to persistent pigmentation and the inflammatory response visible as redness in sun-damaged skin.
Clinical Evidence & References
Early research suggests that a 2% formulation of cetyl tranexamate mesylate can improve both melanin and erythema (redness) indices in sun-damaged skin. A safety study using a modified patch test protocol indicated the ingredient was well-tolerated across 54 participants.
However, evidence remains limited to preliminary studies. More extensive clinical data would help establish optimal concentrations, efficacy timelines, and performance in diverse skin types and tones. Current findings are promising but warrant further investigation.
How to Use
Cetyl tranexamate mesylate is typically found in serums applied to clean skin, once or twice daily depending on product instructions. Allow the serum to absorb fully before layering other products. Results may take several weeks of consistent use; pigmentation concerns respond gradually to topical treatment. Always use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher during the day, as sun exposure can reverse progress.
