What Is Tranexamic Acid?
Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of lysine, one of the amino acids. It began life in medicine as a treatment used to reduce excessive bleeding, and its usefulness in skincare was noticed almost by accident when patients taking it reported that stubborn facial pigmentation looked lighter.
That origin explains why it behaves so differently from the other brightening ingredients. Most of them, including vitamin C, alpha-arbutin and kojic acid, work by interfering with tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin. Tranexamic acid largely does not. It acts further upstream, on the signalling that tells pigment cells to become active in the first place, which is why it is so often combined with the others rather than chosen instead of them.
On an ingredients list it appears as Tranexamic Acid, and you may also see the related Cetyl Tranexamate Mesylate, an oil-soluble derivative designed to pass through the skin barrier more readily. Cosmetic products typically use 2% to 5%.
Despite the name it is not an exfoliating acid. It does not lower the pH of a formula in any meaningful way, does not cause shedding and does not increase sensitivity to daylight. It is also unusually well tolerated, including by skin that finds most brightening ingredients uncomfortable.
It appears mainly in serums and treatment products aimed at the appearance of stubborn, patchy or heat-related pigmentation, and at the marks left behind after blemishes have healed.

How It Works
Pigment cells do not act alone. They respond to signals from the surrounding skin, and one of the more significant of those signals comes from keratinocytes, the ordinary skin cells that make up most of the outer layers. When skin is exposed to UV light, heat or inflammation, those cells release messengers that instruct pigment cells to step up production. Tranexamic acid appears to interrupt that conversation.
Specifically, it interferes with the plasmin pathway, which is the same system it acts on in its medical use. Reducing plasmin activity reduces the release of the messengers that stimulate melanin production. The practical consequence is that tranexamic acid works on the cause of the instruction rather than on the machinery that carries it out, which is precisely why it complements tyrosinase inhibitors rather than duplicating them.
This upstream position also explains where it tends to be most useful. Pigmentation driven by heat, inflammation or hormonal influence, the kind that recurs and spreads in patches rather than sitting as discrete spots, is largely a signalling problem, and that is the type of unevenness tranexamic acid is most often chosen for. It also has a modest calming effect and appears to help with the look of redness and the visible blood vessels that often accompany patchy pigmentation.
It is a slow ingredient. Two to three months is a fair expectation, and it works far better when paired with rigorous daily sun protection, since the signals it suppresses are largely triggered by light and heat.

Multiple randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses demonstrate its efficacy, with a mechanism distinct from conventional brightening agents: rather than solely inhibiting melanin production, it interrupts signalling between keratinocytes and melanocytes, making it particularly effective for UV-induced and hormonally driven pigmentation. This approach also contributes to its favourable tolerability profile in sensitive skin types.
The ingredient is well-established as safe and effective, though individual response varies and visible improvement typically requires 8–12 weeks of consistent use. While the published evidence is substantial, most studies have focused on melasma in specific populations; data on broader pigmentation concerns and long-term maintenance remain more limited. Tranexamic acid performs well in combination with other brightening ingredients and is a reliable option for those seeking a gentle, evidence-backed approach to stubborn discolouration.

How to Use
Tranexamic acid is undemanding to use and works best as part of a combination rather than on its own.
- Strength: 2–5% is the usual range in cosmetic products, and 3% is a common, sensible figure.
- When: morning and night. It does not increase sensitivity to daylight and needs no tolerance-building.
- Order in the routine: after cleansing and watery layers, before moisturiser.
- Combine, do not substitute. Because it works on a different pathway, it pairs particularly well with niacinamide, alpha-arbutin, vitamin C and azelaic acid. Layering ingredients that act at different points usually outperforms increasing the strength of any one of them.
- Sunscreen and heat matter. SPF 30 or above daily is essential, and if your pigmentation flares in hot weather, near ovens or after sun exposure, minimising heat on the face is part of the treatment rather than an afterthought.
- Gentle exfoliation helps. A retinoid or a mild AHA on alternate evenings clears pigment already at the surface while tranexamic acid reduces the signal to make more.
- Pairs comfortably with retinoids, and it is a useful choice for skin that finds vitamin C irritating.
- Give it three months. Patchy, recurrent pigmentation responds slowly and tends to return if sun protection lapses.
If pigmentation is extensive, longstanding or worsening despite consistent care, it is worth speaking to a skincare professional about it rather than continuing to escalate products at home.
