What Is Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Flower Extract?

Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Flower Extract is a botanical extract drawn from the flowers of feverfew, a small white-and-yellow daisy also catalogued under the botanical name Tanacetum parthenium. It sits in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family, the same plant group as chamomile, calendula, arnica and ragweed, and its common name is an old one, predating any use of the plant in cosmetics by centuries.

In skincare, feverfew flower extract is used as an antioxidant and soothing botanical. You will typically find it in serums, moisturisers, after-sun products and formulas aimed at skin that looks red or reactive, usually as a supporting ingredient rather than the headline active.

One detail matters more than any other with this extract: which version of it has been used. Whole feverfew contains parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone that is a well-documented contact allergen and the main reason feverfew features so heavily in the literature on daisy-family contact dermatitis. Cosmetic suppliers responded by developing parthenolide-depleted feverfew extracts, in which that compound is reduced to very low levels during processing while the flavonoids and other polyphenols are retained. Depleted is not the same as absent, and as the safety section below explains, people already sensitised to feverfew have still reacted to depleted extracts. The INCI name printed on the pack is identical either way, so the only dependable way to know what you are getting is to ask the brand directly whether a parthenolide-depleted extract has been used.

How It Works

Feverfew's cosmetic activity is generally credited to its flavonoid and polyphenol fraction, which behaves as a free-radical scavenger. Laboratory work published in Archives of Dermatological Research in 2008 reported that a parthenolide-depleted feverfew extract neutralised a broad range of reactive oxygen species in test-tube assays — the unstable molecules generated by UV exposure and pollution that are associated with the visible signs of ageing.

A second strand of research looks at what happens inside skin cells. A 2013 paper in the Journal of Dermatological Science reported that a purified feverfew extract activated the Nrf2/ARE pathway — a cell's own built-in antioxidant response system — via a PI3-kinase-dependent route in cultured skin cells. Put simply, rather than only mopping up free radicals directly, the extract appears to nudge the cell's own defence machinery into a more active state. That was cell-culture work, so it describes a plausible mechanism rather than a guaranteed outcome on your face.

Evidence in humans is thinner. The 2008 work also included a clinical test in which parthenolide-depleted feverfew was associated with less visible redness than a placebo 24 hours after UV exposure. That is a promising signal, but it is a single study, the published detail on it is limited and the work is industry-generated, so it is fairer to treat feverfew as a helpful supporting antioxidant than as a proven star.

Research on feverfew extracts demonstrates measurable antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in laboratory settings. Studies using various extraction methods have shown the plant contains compounds with potential protective properties against oxidative stress and cellular damage in skin cells.

It is important to note that most existing research has been conducted in vitro or on plant extracts rather than finished skincare formulations. Clinical evidence specifically demonstrating efficacy when this ingredient is applied topically at typical cosmetic concentrations is limited. Further human studies would help establish whether these laboratory findings translate to meaningful benefits in real-world skincare use.

How to Use

  • Check the version. Look for wording such as parthenolide-depleted or parthenolide-free on the pack or brand site. The INCI name is the same either way, so if it is not stated, ask the brand before buying.
  • Treat it as a supporting player. It sits well alongside niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides and squalane in a calming, barrier-friendly routine.
  • Morning use makes sense. Antioxidants complement daily sunscreen, but never replace it — apply your SPF regardless.
  • No special pH needed. Unlike acids, feverfew extract is not pH-dependent, so it turns up in everything from mists and toners to rich night creams.
  • Daily use is normal. Most formulas containing it are designed for once or twice daily application, morning and evening.
  • Patch test first. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm daily for several days before using it on your face, especially if your skin is easily provoked.
  • Introduce one new product at a time so that if something does not agree with you, you know which formula was responsible.

Safety & Precautions

Feverfew is a recognised contact allergen, and parthenolide is the compound most often responsible. If you have a known allergy to daisy-family plants — chamomile, arnica, calendula, ragweed — approach feverfew with real caution even in parthenolide-depleted form, and speak to a GP or dermatologist first.

A 2010 report in Contact Dermatitis patch tested seven feverfew-allergic patients against two creams made with a parthenolide-depleted extract; four reacted to one of the creams, and those reactions went hand in hand with their own positive patch tests to parthenolide itself. When that cream was re-analysed around two years later no parthenolide could be detected, so the authors concluded parthenolide-depleted feverfew products can still provoke reactions in feverfew-sensitive people.

Patch test before facial use, keep it away from the eye area and broken skin, and stop using it if you notice stinging, itching or a rash. Oral feverfew supplements are traditionally avoided in pregnancy; topical cosmetic use is a different exposure route, but published evidence is limited, so check with your midwife or GP if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
