What Is Euglena Gracilis Polysaccharide?
Euglena gracilis polysaccharide is derived from a single-celled microalga and is primarily composed of paramylon, a type of beta-glucan storage compound. In skincare formulations, it functions as a gel-forming agent and skin conditioner, helping to build texture and improve the feel of products on the skin.
The ingredient works at a cosmetic level to adjust viscosity and create desirable sensory properties in creams, serums and gels. Beyond its texture-building role, preliminary research suggests the polysaccharide may have broader skin-conditioning properties, though evidence in topical application remains limited.
How It Works
As a polysaccharide, euglena gracilis extract forms a protective film or gel layer on the skin, which can help condition the stratum corneum and improve how products spread. This physical conditioning effect is its primary documented cosmetic function.
Animal studies suggest paramylon (the active polysaccharide component) may have immunomodulatory properties that could reduce inflammatory markers, but evidence for these effects in topical human skincare is not yet robust. Most of its practical benefit in skincare products comes from its texture and formulation properties rather than proven active efficacy.
