What Is Geranium Extract?
Geranium extract, also known as geranium oil or Pelargonium graveolens oil (sometimes listed as Geranium Pratense), is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of the geranium plant. It's used in cosmetics primarily for its fragrance and, as a plant-derived botanical, is also credited with some antioxidant activity, similar to many essential oils rich in naturally occurring plant compounds.
You'll find geranium extract in fragranced skincare, body care and haircare products, often as part of a wider botanical or essential-oil blend rather than as a stand-alone treatment ingredient. Because it is an essential oil, it is a more concentrated, aromatic ingredient than a typical plant water or gentle extract.
Benefits for Your Skin
How It Works
Geranium oil contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including constituents such as citronellol, geraniol and linalool, which give it its characteristic scent and contribute to its antioxidant properties. These compounds are also recognised fragrance allergens, which is why geranium oil (like many essential oils) carries a higher potential for skin sensitivity compared with non-fragranced ingredients.
For this reason, it's most often used at low concentrations in leave-on and rinse-off products, and is generally better tolerated by normal, resilient skin than by very sensitive or reactive skin types.
Key points
- Provides natural fragrance in skincare, body care and haircare formulations.
- Contributes antioxidant activity as a plant-derived essential oil ingredient.
- Often included in botanical or aromatherapy-inspired product blends.
- Used at low concentrations to balance scent with skin tolerability.
- A well-established essential oil with a long history of use in cosmetics and perfumery.
Can geranium extract irritate my skin?
It can, particularly for people with sensitive or reactive skin. As an essential oil, geranium extract contains natural fragrance compounds such as geraniol and citronellol, which are recognised potential sensitisers. If you have a history of fragrance sensitivity, it's worth patch testing any product containing geranium extract before applying it more widely.
Is geranium extract the same as geranium essential oil?
On an ingredient list, "geranium extract" and "geranium oil" often refer to the same steam-distilled essential oil, sometimes listed by its botanical name, such as Pelargonium graveolens oil. Formulations can vary, so check the specific INCI name on the product packaging if you want to know exactly what's included.
