What Is Ginkgo Biflavones?
Ginkgo biflavones are dimeric flavonoid compounds extracted from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, one of the oldest living tree species. These polyphenolic molecules are prized in skincare for their antioxidant properties and their ability to influence blood flow and cellular signalling pathways in the skin.
In formulations, ginkgo biflavones function primarily as skin protectants and antioxidants, helping to neutralise free radical damage and support the skin's natural defence mechanisms.
Benefits for Your Skin
How It Works
Ginkgo biflavones work through multiple mechanisms. They inhibit phosphodiesterase enzymes, which are involved in regulating cellular messenger molecules like cAMP and cGMP. By modulating these pathways, biflavones may enhance blood vessel relaxation and improve microcirculation to the skin.
Additionally, their polyphenolic structure allows them to scavenge free radicals—reactive oxygen species that damage cell membranes and DNA. This antioxidant capacity helps protect skin cells from photoageing and environmental stress.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro studies indicate that ginkgo biflavones can protect cultured human skin fibroblasts against UVB-induced damage, and may stimulate lipolytic activity at specific concentrations. Research also shows that certain biflavone compounds inhibit phosphodiesterase-5, a mechanism linked to improved vascular function and nitric oxide signalling.
However, most evidence comes from laboratory and cell-based studies rather than clinical trials on human skin. Whilst the findings are promising, further in vivo research would help clarify the degree of benefit when these compounds are applied topically at typical skincare concentrations.
How to Use
Ginkgo biflavones are typically found in serums, essences, and moisturisers. They work well alongside other antioxidants such as vitamin E or niacinamide. For best results, use as part of a consistent routine and combine with daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, since antioxidants complement rather than replace UV protection.
