Glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer is a synthetic polymer created through the combination of glyceryl acrylate and acrylic acid. It functions primarily as a thickening agent and humectant within skincare formulations, helping to build viscosity and create the desired texture whilst also drawing moisture towards the skin.This ingredient is used in roughly 1.2% of skincare products, typically appearing in creams, serums, and gels where a smooth, stable consistency is desired.

As a humectant, glyceryl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer has hygroscopic properties, meaning it attracts water molecules from both the environment and deeper skin layers. This helps to increase skin surface hydration when used in formulations.Simultaneously, its polymer structure allows it to thicken products, giving them body and stability without requiring heavy oils or waxes. This dual function makes it useful in formulations targeting hydration without excessive occlusion.

This ingredient works best when used in formulations designed to be applied to damp or freshly cleansed skin, as it can more effectively draw and bind moisture when the skin barrier is slightly hydrated. It is typically formulated by manufacturers at concentrations optimised for both efficacy and stability, so there is no benefit to using multiple products containing it sequentially.

Generally well-tolerated with rare reports of allergic contact dermatitis. Suitable for most skin types, though those with known acrylate sensitivities should avoid.
