Hectorite is a naturally occurring clay mineral composed of silicates—compounds made from silicon, oxygen, and magnesium. It belongs to the same family as bentonite and kaolin, other clays commonly used in skincare. Hectorite can also be produced synthetically for cosmetic use.
In skincare formulations, hectorite functions primarily as an absorbent and viscosity controller. It helps to absorb excess sebum and moisture, whilst also thickening and stabilising emulsions and suspensions, improving the texture and consistency of products.
How It Works
