Disteardimonium Hectorite is a quaternium-modified (quaternary ammonium-treated) form of hectorite, a naturally occurring smectite clay mineral. The base clay, hectorite, is listed in the EU CosIng database with functions including absorbent, bulking and viscosity-controlling — the chemical modification with distearyldimonium chloride makes the clay dispersible in oils rather than water, which is what allows it to be used in oil-based cosmetic formulations.
