Human umbilical mesenchymal stem cell exosomes are tiny vesicles—approximately 30-150 nanometres in size—released by stem cells derived from umbilical cord tissue. These particles function as messengers between cells, carrying proteins and other signalling molecules that influence how skin cells behave and communicate.
In skincare formulations, these exosomes are used for their skin-conditioning and protective properties. They work at a cellular communication level rather than through direct chemical transformation, making them a form of biotechnology-derived ingredient.
How It Works
Exosomes deliver their effects through intercellular communication. Once applied to skin, they release bioactive molecules—primarily proteins—that interact with skin cells and influence their behaviour. This differs from ingredients that work through direct chemical action; instead, exosomes essentially instruct cells to initiate repair and regeneration processes.
Research indicates they may activate specific cellular pathways involved in collagen production, cell proliferation, and wound healing. The mechanism appears to involve reduction of inflammatory signalling and promotion of tissue remodelling phases that occur naturally during skin repair.

Laboratory and animal model studies show promise. Research on umbilical cord-derived exosomes demonstrates effects on wound healing acceleration, reduced inflammation in damaged skin, and stimulation of hair follicle regeneration in models of hair loss. These studies suggest exosomes can influence multiple phases of the skin repair cycle, from inflammation control through to tissue remodelling.
However, human clinical trial data in cosmetic skincare remains limited. Most evidence comes from therapeutic wound-healing contexts or pre-clinical models. While the biological activity is documented, the extent of benefit in healthy skin with regular topical use requires further investigation. Exosomes also possess lower immunogenicity than whole stem cells, which may make them suitable for topical application.
