What Is Hydrolyzed Conchiolin Protein?
Hydrolyzed conchiolin protein (HCP) is a protein derived from pearl and nacre (mother-of-pearl) through hydrolysis, a process that breaks down the protein into smaller, more absorbable molecules. Conchiolin is the organic protein matrix found in pearl structures, traditionally used in Asian skincare practices.
In formulations, HCP functions as a skin conditioning agent. Research suggests it may influence the biological pathways involved in melanin production within skin cells, potentially supporting a more even skin tone.
How It Works
HCP appears to work by modulating two key signalling pathways involved in melanin production: the PKA/CREB pathway and the MEK/ERK pathway. By influencing these pathways, it may reduce the activity of tyrosinase and related enzymes responsible for converting amino acids into melanin pigment.
Additionally, emerging evidence suggests HCP may support the breakdown and clearance of existing melanin within skin cells, rather than solely preventing new melanin formation. However, the full mechanism in living human skin requires further investigation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and cell-based studies demonstrate that HCP can inhibit melanin production in melanoma cells and melanocyte models. Research using 3D skin models and zebrafish models shows promise for skin-lightening effects, and the ingredient appears to work through identifiable molecular mechanisms.
However, human clinical trials on HCP are limited. Existing evidence comes primarily from controlled laboratory settings, and translation to real-world efficacy in diverse human skin remains unclear. More rigorous human studies would strengthen confidence in its practical skincare benefits.

How to Use
HCP is typically incorporated into serums, essences, and moisturisers rather than rinse-off products. For skin-brightening concerns, consistent daily use is generally recommended, as melanin regulation is a gradual process. Layering HCP-containing products with broad-spectrum sunscreen is advisable, as UV exposure can trigger melanin production independent of topical treatments.
