Hydrolysed jojoba esters are derived from jojoba oil (from the Simmondsia chinensis plant) that has undergone hydrolysis — a chemical process that breaks down the oil into smaller molecular components. This results in an ingredient that functions as both an emollient and film former in skincare formulations.In products, hydrolysed jojoba esters work to soften the skin and help maintain moisture levels. They are found in roughly 0.5% of skincare products, typically used alongside other moisturising agents.

Hydrolysed jojoba esters function as emollients, meaning they work by coating the outer layer of skin to seal in moisture. The hydrolysis process makes the molecules small enough to integrate well into formulations whilst retaining moisturising properties.When combined with other humectants (ingredients that draw water into the skin), preliminary research suggests hydrolysed jojoba esters may provide a sustained moisturising effect lasting around 24 hours. To maximise hydration benefits, apply products containing this ingredient to damp skin, as this helps lock in moisture.
