What Is Hydroxylated Lecithin?
Hydroxylated lecithin is a modified form of lecithin, a phospholipid naturally present in plant and animal tissues. It is created by adding hydroxyl groups to standard lecithin, which alters its chemical structure and enhances its ability to blend oil and water-based ingredients together.
In skincare formulations, it functions as an emulsifier, surfactant, and skin-conditioning agent. This means it helps stabilise products by keeping ingredients from separating, reduces surface tension to aid ingredient penetration, and contributes to skin softness and hydration.
How It Works
Hydroxylated lecithin works through its amphiphilic nature—it has both water-loving and oil-loving regions. This dual affinity allows it to position itself at the interface between oil and water phases in a formula, preventing them from separating and creating a stable emulsion.
At the skin level, its phospholipid structure is similar to lipids naturally found in the stratum corneum, the skin's outer barrier. This chemical similarity may allow it to integrate with and support the skin's own lipid matrix, contributing to barrier function and hydration retention.
