Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) is a semi-synthetic polymer derived from cellulose, a naturally occurring plant fibre. It is chemically modified through the addition of hydroxypropyl groups, which makes it soluble in water and able to form clear gels or viscous solutions.
In skincare formulations, HPC serves several technical functions: it acts as a binder to hold ingredients together, stabilises emulsions to prevent separation, controls texture and thickness, and forms a thin protective film on the skin's surface. It is used sparingly in skincare products—appearing in roughly 0.1% of formulations—typically at low concentrations where its effects are cumulative rather than dramatic.
How It Works
HPC molecules are long-chain polymers that absorb water and swell to form a gel-like matrix. When applied to skin, this polymer layer sits on the surface and can absorb a small amount of moisture, potentially supporting the skin's natural hydration retention. The film it creates is permeable—it doesn't seal the skin—so it allows normal transpiration while offering a degree of protective barrier.
Within a formulation, HPC molecules interact with both water and oil-based ingredients, helping to keep them uniformly mixed. This stabilising action prevents the product from separating into layers during storage and use.
