What Is Isosorbide Dicaprylate?
Isosorbide dicaprylate (IDC) is a synthetic derivative of caprylic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. It is created by combining isosorbide (a sugar alcohol) with caprylic acid chains, producing a lightweight conditioning agent designed to work with the skin's own structure.
In skincare formulations, IDC functions as a skin conditioner and emollient. It works to improve the skin's ability to retain moisture and maintain its protective barrier function, making it particularly relevant for formulations targeting barrier-compromised or dehydrated skin.
How It Works
