What Is Isosorbide Dicaprylate?

Isosorbide dicaprylate (IDC) is a synthetic derivative of caprylic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. It is created by combining isosorbide (a sugar alcohol) with caprylic acid chains, producing a lightweight conditioning agent designed to work with the skin's own structure.

In skincare formulations, IDC functions as a skin conditioner and emollient. It works to improve the skin's ability to retain moisture and maintain its protective barrier function, making it particularly relevant for formulations targeting barrier-compromised or dehydrated skin.

How It Works

IDC interacts with the skin's keratinocytes (the cells that form the outer layer) to promote their healthy differentiation and maturation. This supports the organisation of the stratum corneum—the skin's outermost, protective layer—which is critical for water retention and barrier resilience.
