Kojic acid is a by-product of fermentation, produced by certain fungi and most famously associated with the production of sake, soy sauce and miso. It was noticed, as the story is usually told, because workers handling the fermenting rice had notably even-toned hands. The version used in cosmetics is produced by controlled fermentation rather than harvested from food production.
On an ingredients list it appears as Kojic Acid or, more often in modern products, as Kojic Dipalmitate. That derivative exists for a specific reason: pure kojic acid is unstable, oxidising on exposure to light and air and turning from white to brown, at which point it is no longer doing much. Kojic dipalmitate is more stable and oil-soluble, though it is generally considered less potent, so the two are not interchangeable on a like-for-like basis.
Cosmetic products typically use 1% to 4%, and 1% to 2% is the more common range in well-formulated products. It appears in serums, creams, and in cleansing bars, which are popular but deliver comparatively little given how briefly they stay on the skin.
It has a reputation for being among the more irritating brightening ingredients, particularly at higher percentages and on sensitive skin, and it is one of the more common causes of contact sensitivity in this category. That is worth knowing before choosing it over gentler alternatives such as alpha-arbutin or niacinamide.
Packaging is a genuine quality signal here. Kojic acid belongs in opaque, airtight containers, and a product that has turned noticeably brown should be replaced.

How It Works
Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that controls the rate at which melanin is produced. It does this by binding copper, which tyrosinase requires in order to function. Without access to copper the enzyme cannot work efficiently, so less new pigment is made. This is a well-characterised mechanism and it is the same broad territory occupied by alpha-arbutin, though the route to the enzyme differs.
Because it acts on the production of new pigment rather than on pigment that already exists, its effect is gradual. Marks already present in the upper layers fade only as those layers naturally renew, which is why kojic acid is usually combined with something that speeds surface turnover and why it is invariably paired with daily sun protection. Without sunscreen, new pigment simply replaces what fades.
Its instability is not a minor packaging detail but part of how it behaves. The same reactivity that lets it bind copper also makes it prone to oxidising, and an oxidised product has lost most of its usefulness. This is the practical reason many formulators prefer kojic dipalmitate despite its lower potency, and why a kojic acid product in a clear jar is worth avoiding.
Given the irritation potential and the stability problem, kojic acid is best regarded as one option among several rather than a first choice, and it is often most useful as a supporting ingredient within a blend rather than as the sole active.

Kojic acid has a well-established evidence base supporting its use as a tyrosinase inhibitor for treating hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Multiple clinical evaluations demonstrate its efficacy at concentrations between 1–4%, where it prevents new melanin formation and allows gradual fading of existing dark spots through natural skin cell turnover. The mechanism is consistent across studies, and its safety profile is generally favourable when formulated appropriately.
However, individual tolerance varies considerably; some users experience irritation, redness, or contact dermatitis, particularly with prolonged use or in sensitive skin types. Kojic dipalmitate represents a more stable derivative that may reduce irritation risk whilst maintaining brightening efficacy, though comparative data remain limited. Time-to-visible results typically extends to 8–12 weeks, and effectiveness is best achieved when combined with sun protection and complementary brightening agents.

How to Use
Kojic acid needs a little more care than most brightening ingredients.
- Strength: 1–2% is sensible. Higher figures increase the chance of irritation more reliably than they increase results.
- Patch test first. This is one of the more common causes of contact sensitivity among brightening ingredients, so try it on a small area for a few days before using it on the whole face.
- Start two or three times a week and build only if skin stays comfortable.
- When: evening is the usual choice, particularly if you are also using vitamin C in the morning.
- Order in the routine: after cleansing, before moisturiser.
- Check the packaging. Opaque and airtight only. If the product has darkened noticeably, replace it.
- Sunscreen daily. SPF 30 or above, without exception, or the work is undone as fast as it is done.
- Pairs well with: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help offset its tendency to irritate.
- Go carefully with: strong acids, retinoids and benzoyl peroxide in the same session. Separate them by day or by time of day.
- Consider alternatives first. If your skin is sensitive, alpha-arbutin, niacinamide, azelaic acid or tranexamic acid will usually get you further with far less trouble.
Stop using it if you develop persistent redness, itching or a rash, rather than pushing through.
