What Is Linoleic Acid?

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid, written by chemists as C18:2 because it has an eighteen-carbon chain with two double bonds. It is one of only two fatty acids classed as essential, meaning the human body cannot manufacture it and has to take it in from outside. Its INCI name is Linoleic Acid, and in cosmetic formulas it is almost always supplied as part of a plant oil rather than in isolation.

The richest sources are safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, corn, soybean, hemp seed, rosehip and evening primrose oils, several of which are more than half linoleic acid by weight. It is also the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid in the upper layers of human skin, where it forms part of the lipid matrix that holds the outermost cells together.

In skincare it earns its place as a lightweight emollient and skin-conditioning agent. Formulators reach for it in facial oils, serums, moisturisers, cleansing balms and barrier creams, usually alongside oleic acid, palmitic acid and linolenic acid, since plant oils are naturally mixtures rather than single fatty acids. Reported cosmetic use levels reach up to 21.8% in rinse-off cleansing products and up to 3.4% in leave-on products, with most formulas well below those ceilings. The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has assessed linoleic acid alongside related fatty acids and considers them safe as used in cosmetics, and it is also permitted in food.

How It Works

The outermost layer of skin behaves rather like brickwork: flattened cells set in a mortar of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Linoleic acid is built into a specialised subgroup of that mortar known as acylceramides, where it sits at the end of a very long lipid chain and helps the lipid sheets stack into neat, tightly packed layers. When those layers are well organised, less water escapes through the surface, so skin holds moisture better, looks plumper and feels less tight.

Nutrition research first showed how central it is: when linoleic acid is absent from the diet in laboratory models, the skin surface loses water far more quickly and the outer layer no longer organises properly. That is why it is best described as barrier-supporting rather than as an active in the way an acid or a retinoid is — it is raw material, not a signal.

It is also more fluid than saturated fatty acids, which is why oils high in linoleic acid feel thinner and sink in faster than heavier, oleic-rich oils. Separately, some early laboratory work has looked at linoleic acid in connection with how much pigment skin cells produce. Human evidence for a visible difference in tone is limited, so it is not a reason to choose the ingredient.

How to Use

Linoleic acid is not pH-dependent, so it slots into almost any routine without the timing rules that acids demand.

  • Where it goes: if you are using it as a facial oil, apply it last, after water-based serums, or press a few drops into your moisturiser. In a cream or balm it needs no special placement.
  • How often: once or twice daily is typical, morning and evening, on damp skin so there is moisture to seal in.
  • Pairs well with: ceramides, cholesterol, squalane, niacinamide and panthenol. Following retinoids or exfoliating acids with a linoleic-rich moisturiser helps skin feel more comfortable.
  • Choosing an oil: linoleic-rich oils such as safflower, grapeseed and rosehip are noticeably lighter on the skin than oleic-rich oils like olive or marula, so they suit anyone who dislikes a heavy, slippery finish.
  • Storage: being polyunsaturated it oxidises readily. Choose opaque or airless packaging, keep it cool and dark, and discard any oil that smells sharp, waxy or crayon-like.

Safety & Precautions

Linoleic acid has a reassuring safety record. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel considers it and related fatty acids safe as used in cosmetics, it is permitted in food, it carries no pH restrictions and it does not make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

A few sensible cautions. It is almost always delivered in a seed or nut oil, so check the full ingredient list if you have a known seed, nut, soy or sesame allergy. Oils that have oxidised can feel irritating, so replace anything past its best. Some people find that oil-rich products leave their skin looking bumpier or more congested, in which case a lighter lotion may suit better.
