What Is Lysophosphatidic Acid?
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a simple phospholipid—a type of fat molecule—that occurs naturally in the body and is found in some skincare formulations. It is produced through normal metabolic processes and plays structural roles in cell membranes and biofilms.
In cosmetics, LPA is used primarily as a skin and hair conditioning agent. It works at the surface level to help improve texture and moisture retention, contributing to the conditioning properties of a formula rather than delivering deep systemic effects.
How It Works
LPA is a lipid molecule that integrates into the skin's surface layers and helps reinforce the moisture barrier. It does this by occupying space within the stratum corneum—the outer layer of dead skin cells—and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
The ingredient also binds to specific receptors on skin cells, which may trigger mild signalling pathways involved in cell behaviour and inflammation. However, the extent to which these signalling effects occur at the low concentrations used in cosmetics remains unclear.
