What Is Menthyl Anthranilate?
Menthyl anthranilate is a chemical UV absorber used in sunscreens and sun protection products. It is a synthetic organic compound designed to absorb ultraviolet radiation across both the UVA and UVB spectrum, converting this energy into heat that is then released from the skin.
Unlike physical blockers that sit on the skin's surface, chemical absorbers work by penetrating into the upper layers of the skin and neutralising UV radiation before it can cause damage to skin cells. Menthyl anthranilate is typically used alongside other UV filters in formulations, usually at concentrations between 4–5%.
How It Works
Menthyl anthranilate works through a process called photon absorption. When UV rays contact the ingredient, the molecules absorb the energy from these rays. This absorption excites the molecules to a higher energy state, which they then release as harmless heat. This energy conversion prevents the UV radiation from reaching and damaging skin cells.
The ingredient is particularly valued in combination sunscreen formulations because it provides broad-spectrum coverage. However, like all chemical absorbers, its effectiveness depends on proper application thickness and can be affected by factors such as water exposure and perspiration.

Its efficacy in complete formulations depends on how it is combined with other UV filters and stabilising systems, which is why it is rarely used alone in commercial products.
How to Use
Apply sunscreen containing menthyl anthranilate generously and evenly across all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or heavy perspiration. Use as part of a complete sun protection routine that includes seeking shade during peak UV hours (10am–4pm) and wearing protective clothing where possible.
