Methoxypropylamino cyclohexenylidene ethoxyethylcyanoacetate (MCE) is a synthetic UV filter approved for use in sunscreen formulations. It is designed to absorb ultraviolet radiation in the UVA1 range, specifically wavelengths between 370 and 400 nanometres—a gap that conventional sunscreens often fail to cover adequately.
While most sunscreens protect against UV radiation up to around 370 nm, UVA1 rays penetrate deeper into the skin and can contribute to photodamage, hyperpigmentation, and visible ageing. MCE fills this protection gap by absorbing light at wavelengths where existing filters are weak, typically added to sunscreen formulations at concentrations around 1%.
How It Works
MCE functions as an absorber-type UV filter, meaning it absorbs incoming UV radiation and converts it into heat, which is then safely released from the skin. Its chemical structure is optimised to absorb light at 385 nm—right in the middle of the problematic UVA1 range.
By incorporating MCE into a sunscreen formulation, manufacturers can extend the product's protective range beyond what older or single-filter formulations can achieve. This helps reduce the cumulative photodamage that occurs when UVA1 rays penetrate deeper layers of the epidermis and dermis.

Clinical studies conducted in outdoor summer conditions have examined MCE's impact on visible signs of photodamage. Research in Brazilian and Chinese populations showed that sunscreens formulated with MCE produced measurable improvements in hyperpigmentation and skin texture compared to equivalent sunscreens without the filter when applied twice daily over 4 to 8 weeks.
However, most published evidence comes from relatively short-term studies (4–8 weeks) and in specific populations. Whilst the in vitro data and early clinical results are encouraging, longer-term studies and data across a wider range of skin tones would strengthen confidence in its efficacy for preventing cumulative photodamage and ageing signs.

MCE is typically found in sunscreen products rather than serums or other skincare formats. Use as directed on the sunscreen packaging, applying generously and reapplying every two hours or after swimming or sweating. For best results, combine with other photoprotection measures such as seeking shade during peak UV hours and wearing protective clothing.
