What Is Mineral Salts?

Mineral salts are naturally occurring compounds containing essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. In skincare formulations, they function as skin conditioning agents, helping to maintain the skin's natural mineral balance and support barrier health.

These salts are found in various natural sources including seawater and mineral-rich springs. They appear in roughly 0.1% of skincare products, typically at low concentrations to avoid potential irritation.

How It Works

Mineral salts interact with the skin's stratum corneum (outer layer) and contribute to maintaining osmotic balance. Sodium and potassium, in particular, play a role in regulating water retention within skin cells and supporting the skin's natural defence mechanisms.

The specific minerals present—such as magnesium, calcium and zinc—may also support various cellular processes involved in skin repair and maintenance, though the extent of topical benefit for many minerals remains under-researched.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research indicates that seawater and mineral salt solutions containing sodium chloride and potassium chloride may help reduce irritant-induced skin reactions when applied for short periods. One study found that a 2-minute application of mineral water containing these salts showed promise for irritated skin, though the effect may vary depending on the specific formulation and concentration.

However, evidence for many individual minerals in topical skincare remains limited. The topical benefits of minerals such as iron, copper and selenium are largely unexplored in cosmetic applications, so claims around these components should be viewed cautiously.

How to Use

Mineral salt products are typically used as part of a regular skincare routine. If using a product containing these salts, apply as directed—usually to clean skin. Allow adequate time for absorption before layering other products. If you have sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea, patch test first, as some individuals may experience stinging or increased dryness.

Safety & Precautions

Mineral salts are generally well-tolerated in appropriately formulated products. However, some individuals—particularly those with eczema, rosacea, or very sensitive skin—may experience stinging, dryness or irritation; these products are best avoided or used with caution in these cases.
