Myristyl Betaine

Myristyl betaine is a plant-derived surfactant — a molecule with both water-loving and oil-loving properties that allow it to lift dirt and oil from the skin's surface. It belongs to the betaine family of surfactants, which are gentler alternatives to some traditional cleansing agents.In skincare formulations, it primarily functions as a cleansing agent and conditioning ingredient. It helps remove impurities whilst maintaining some of the skin's natural protective oils, making it suitable for products designed to cleanse without over-drying.

Myristyl betaine works by surrounding oil and dirt particles with its molecules, allowing them to be rinsed away with water. This detergency action is gentler than many conventional surfactants because betaines are amphoteric — they balance their cleansing power with a naturally conditioning effect.Because it preserves more of the skin's natural oils during cleansing, it minimises the drying sensation often associated with more aggressive surfactants, whilst still effectively removing daily grime and cosmetic residue.
