Oleth-3 Phosphate

Oleth-3 phosphate is a surfactant — a molecule with both water-loving and oil-loving properties — derived from oleyl alcohol (a fatty alcohol). In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as an emulsifier and cleansing agent, helping to blend oil and water-based ingredients together and enabling products to remove oils and impurities from the skin surface.It appears in a variety of skincare products, particularly cleansers and emulsified treatments, where its role is largely functional rather than therapeutic.

Oleth-3 phosphate molecules position themselves at the boundary between oil and water phases, with one end attracted to oils and the other to water. This allows it to suspend oily substances within a water-based formula, preventing separation and enabling even distribution across the skin.In cleansing products, this same mechanism helps the formula surround and lift away sebum and oil-soluble impurities, making them easier to rinse away with water.

Oleth-3 phosphate is typically not an active ingredient you would adjust your usage of — it works behind the scenes in finished formulations. If using a cleanser or treatment containing it, follow the product instructions. As with any new product, introduce it gradually if you have sensitive skin to assess tolerance.
