PEG-16 is a polyethylene glycol, a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum. In skincare, it functions as both a humectant and a solvent, meaning it can draw water into the skin whilst also helping to dissolve and blend other ingredients together.You'll find PEG-16 in many formulations because it's effective at improving texture, stability and hydration without leaving a heavy residue. It's widely used across skincare products at varying concentrations depending on the desired effect.

PEG-16 works as a humectant by attracting water molecules from both the environment and deeper skin layers, drawing them into the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin). This increased hydration can plump fine lines temporarily and improve skin's overall appearance and feel.As a solvent, it helps dissolve and suspend other ingredients that might otherwise be difficult to incorporate into a formula, improving product efficacy and stability.

PEG-16 is a supporting ingredient rather than a treatment on its own, so you'll encounter it as part of a broader formula.
