What Is PEG-7m?
PEG-7M is a polyethylene glycol—a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum or plant-derived sources. It functions primarily as a formulation ingredient rather than an active compound, working behind the scenes to improve the stability and texture of skincare products.
In skincare, PEG-7M acts as a binder, emulsion stabiliser, and viscosity controller. This means it helps keep oil and water-based ingredients mixed together, prevents separation over time, and adjusts how thick or thin a formula feels on the skin. It does not penetrate the skin barrier or deliver direct therapeutic benefits.
How It Works
PEG-7M is a large molecular weight polymer that sits at the interface between oil and water in a formula. It acts as a molecular bridge, holding these normally incompatible phases together and preventing them from separating over time. This stabilisation allows formulators to create more elegant textures and ensure that active ingredients remain evenly distributed.
The polymer also increases viscosity—the thickness of a formula—which can influence how a product spreads on skin and how long it remains in contact with the surface. It remains on the skin surface and does not penetrate the stratum corneum in meaningful amounts.
