PEG-60 is a polyethylene glycol—a synthetic polymer derived from ethylene oxide and water. In skincare, it functions as both a humectant (moisture-attracting ingredient) and a solvent, helping to dissolve other actives and improve product texture. Lower molecular weight PEGs like PEG-60 are commonly used in topical formulations because of their hydrophilic nature.This ingredient is widely incorporated into emulsifiers, cleansing agents and skin conditioners across the cosmetic industry. It is considered chemically stable and is recognised as generally safe for topical use in cosmetics.

PEG-60 is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and binds water molecules. When applied topically, it draws moisture from deeper skin layers and the surrounding environment toward the surface, helping to plump and hydrate the stratum corneum (outer layer of skin).Additionally, its solvent properties allow it to dissolve and stabilise other ingredients within a formulation, ensuring they remain evenly distributed and effective throughout the product's shelf life.

PEG-60 is a background ingredient rather than an active, so there are no specific usage rules. Use products containing it as directed by the formulation. Since it enhances penetration, pair it with actives you wish to maximise—though this also means those actives will absorb more readily, so monitor your skin if you are using multiple penetration-enhancing ingredients simultaneously.

PEG-60 is well-tolerated by most skin types and is approved for cosmetic use. Some individuals with sensitivity to penetration enhancers may experience mild irritation; discontinue if this occurs.
