What Is Perilla Frutescens Seed Oil?

Perilla frutescens seed oil is a plant-derived oil extracted from the seeds of the perilla plant, native to East Asia. It is composed primarily of essential fatty acids—particularly linolenic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid—along with sterols and other lipid compounds that support skin health.

In skincare formulations, perilla seed oil functions as an emollient and skin conditioning agent. Its role is to soften the skin surface, improve moisture retention, and help maintain the structural integrity of the skin barrier through its fatty acid profile.

How It Works

Perilla seed oil works primarily through its composition of essential fatty acids (linolenic, oleic, and linoleic acids), which are structural components naturally found in healthy skin. These fatty acids are absorbed into the outer layers of the skin, where they help fill gaps in the stratum corneum and reduce transepidermal water loss.

The oil's sterols and antioxidant compounds may also support skin cells in managing oxidative stress—damage caused by free radicals and environmental factors like UV exposure. This is thought to occur at the cellular level, though human clinical evidence remains limited.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro and animal studies suggest perilla seed oil may support skin health during UV-induced stress. Research in human dermal fibroblasts (skin cells) and hairless mice models showed improvements in cell viability and antioxidant markers when perilla oil was applied alongside UV exposure. However, these findings are preliminary and do not indicate that the oil provides sun protection in place of dedicated sunscreens.

Evidence for perilla seed oil's broader benefits in human skin is still emerging. Whilst the fatty acid composition is well-understood from a biochemical perspective, more clinical studies in human volunteers would help clarify its practical benefits for different skin concerns.

How to Use

Perilla seed oil is typically used as part of a formulated product (serum, moisturiser, or emulsion) rather than applied as a pure oil on its own. Apply to clean, damp skin in the morning or evening, or as directed by the product instructions. It can be layered with other skincare steps and works well in both hydrating and barrier-support routines. If using pure oil, a small amount (two to three drops) is usually sufficient for the face.

Safety & Precautions

Perilla seed oil is generally well-tolerated and safe for topical use in cosmetic formulations. As with any plant-derived ingredient, individuals with known allergies to the perilla plant or related species should avoid products containing this oil.
