Polyquaternium-72 is a synthetic conditioning polymer—a large molecule built from repeating units with a positive electrical charge. It is derived from petrochemical sources and designed to bind to the negatively charged surface of hair fibres.In skincare and haircare formulations, this ingredient functions primarily as a film-former and antistatic agent. It deposits a thin, protective layer on the hair surface, reducing frizz and static electricity whilst improving the overall feel and appearance of hair.

Polyquaternium-72 carries a positive charge that is attracted to the negatively charged surface of hair. This electrostatic attraction allows the polymer to adhere firmly to each hair fibre, creating a thin, continuous coating.This coating smooths down the outer layer (cuticle) of the hair, reducing roughness and the scattering of light that causes a dull appearance. By filling microscopic gaps and imperfections on the hair surface, it reduces the movement of individual hairs relative to one another—the primary cause of frizz and static.

Polyquaternium-72 is typically found in rinse-off conditioners, leave-in treatments, and styling products. Because it builds up on hair with repeated use, it is most effective when used consistently as part of a regular haircare routine. If you notice product buildup (dullness or reduced volume), a clarifying shampoo used occasionally can help reset the hair.
