PPG-6

PPG-6 is a humectant and solvent derived from propylene glycol. It belongs to a class of ingredients called humectants, which are hygroscopic compounds that draw moisture from the air and deeper skin layers to the surface, helping to maintain hydration.In formulations, PPG-6 serves a dual purpose: it conditions the skin by improving its moisture content, and it acts as a solvent to help dissolve and blend other ingredients. This makes it a functional addition to serums, toners, and moisturisers where both hydration and formula stability are desired.

PPG-6 is a hygroscopic ingredient, meaning it has an affinity for water molecules. When applied to skin, it attracts moisture from the surrounding environment and from the deeper layers of the epidermis, drawing it towards the surface. This action helps to keep the stratum corneum (the outermost layer) hydrated and plump.Its solvent properties allow it to dissolve other active ingredients and help them disperse evenly throughout a formulation, improving both product stability and the delivery of other beneficial components.

PPG-6 is an ingredient formulated into products rather than used in isolation. Look for it in the ingredient list of hydrating serums, toners, and moisturisers. Since it functions best when some environmental humidity is present, application to slightly damp skin may optimise its humectant properties. In very dry climates, layering a PPG-6-containing product under an occlusive moisturiser can help lock in the hydration it draws to the skin surface.

PPG-6 is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for topical use in cosmetics at typical concentrations. It is non-irritating for the vast majority of skin types, including sensitive skin.
