What Is Rhamnolipids?
Rhamnolipids are biosurfactants—molecules with both water-loving and oil-loving properties—produced naturally by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In skincare formulations, they function as emulsifiers and emulsion stabilisers, helping to blend oil and water-based ingredients into a uniform product. They also contribute to the sensory profile of creams and lotions, often improving spreadability and skin feel.
As a naturally-derived ingredient, rhamnolipids offer an alternative to entirely synthetic surfactants, though they perform similar stabilising roles in cosmetic formulations.
How It Works
Rhamnolipids work by positioning themselves at the boundary between oil and water molecules within a formulation. One end of the molecule is attracted to oils, whilst the other is attracted to water, allowing these normally incompatible substances to mix evenly. This prevents separation or greasiness and keeps the product stable on the shelf.
When applied to skin, they also help other ingredients distribute more evenly across the surface, which can enhance the overall sensory experience and absorption profile of the product.

Research into rhamnolipids in skincare is limited. Most published studies examine their use in environmental bioremediation and their interaction with bacteria in wound or infection models, rather than their cosmetic benefits in healthy skin.
Evidence specific to their role as emulsifiers or their effects on skin hydration, barrier function, or appearance is currently sparse. They are established as safe surfactants and function reliably in formulations, but claims about direct skin benefits would require further targeted research.
