What Is Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract?

Rubus fruticosus (blackberry) fruit extract has significance as a skin care ingredient due to its many beneficial compounds. Of note, it is rich in antioxidants of the phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin varieties. These compounds help bolster skin’s defense against photoageing and offer soothing effects. Blackberry also contains vitamin C, which is known to provide a host of anti-ageing benefits for skin.

The antioxidant activity of blackberry fruit has been evaluated using the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) method, where it was determined to have high value for inhibiting negative effects of environmental stressors. This bodes well for both topical applications and oral intake via food/supplement form.

Rubus fruticosus is native to Europe and sometimes referred to as European blackberry. It is also known as bramble blackberry.

How It Works

Polyphenols are organic compounds that exist naturally in plant tissue. When applied topically, they are understood to neutralise free radicals—unstable molecules that can contribute to skin ageing and inflammation. This antioxidant activity may help protect skin cells from damage.

The astringent properties are thought to work through mild protein interaction on the skin surface, potentially creating a subtle tightening effect. However, the specific mechanisms in cosmetic formulations remain incompletely characterised.

How to Use

Blackberry fruit extract is most commonly encountered in toners, essences, and light formulations rather than concentrated treatments. It works well as part of a broader skincare routine and can be layered with other ingredients. There is no specific evidence suggesting optimal timing or frequency beyond standard product directions.

Safety & Precautions

Rubus fruticosus fruit extract is generally well-tolerated and is not a known sensitiser. As with any botanical ingredient, patch testing is sensible if you have known plant allergies or very reactive skin.
