Sodium Carbonate

Sodium carbonate is an inorganic salt derived from natural mineral sources. In skincare, it serves primarily as a buffering agent—a substance that helps maintain or adjust the pH of a formula to keep it within a skin-safe range (typically between 4.5 and 7). It also functions as a bulking agent, adding texture and substance to products without active benefit claims.This ingredient is relatively uncommon in skincare, appearing in roughly 0.3% of products. When present, it usually works behind the scenes to ensure formulations remain stable and comfortable for skin.

Sodium carbonate works by neutralising excess hydrogen ions in a formula, raising pH when needed. It acts as part of a buffering system—similar to how your skin's natural pH is maintained—by releasing or absorbing ions depending on what the formula requires. This keeps the product within an optimal range without relying on stronger, more irritating pH adjusters.

Sodium carbonate works silently within your formula, so there's no special application technique required. Simply use products containing it as directed. Because it appears in so few skincare products, most people will encounter it only occasionally, if at all.

Sodium carbonate is generally well-tolerated in skincare formulations at the concentrations used. In its raw form, it can be alkaline and irritating, but this is not relevant at the levels present in finished products.
