Sodium hydroxypropyl starch phosphate is a modified starch derived from plant sources. It is chemically altered through hydroxypropylation and phosphate modification to improve its stability and functional properties in skincare products.In formulations, it primarily serves as a gentle physical exfoliant and a bulking or thickening agent. Its granular structure allows it to remove dead skin cells when applied topically, whilst its viscosity-controlling properties help stabilise product texture and consistency.

The ingredient works through mechanical exfoliation: its granular particles gently abrade the skin's surface when massaged on, helping to slough away accumulated dead skin cells and surface debris. This mild physical action can help improve skin texture and enhance the absorption of other skincare ingredients.As a thickening agent, it absorbs water and increases the viscosity of the formulation, creating a stable texture that feels pleasant on the skin and allows for even application.

Use 2-3 times per week as a gentle exfoliating treatment. Apply to damp skin, massage gently in circular motions, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with a hydrating toner or moisturiser. Avoid over-exfoliating, as this can compromise the skin barrier. If combined with active ingredients like acids or retinoids, space out usage to prevent irritation.
