Sodium mannose phosphate is a humectant derived from mannose, a naturally occurring sugar. It functions as a skin conditioning agent, working to attract and retain water within the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin).As a polyol phosphate compound, it sits within a broader category of ingredients studied for safety in cosmetics. Its primary role is to support skin hydration by binding water molecules, making it a useful addition to moisturisers and serums aimed at maintaining skin moisture levels.

Sodium mannose phosphate works as a humectant through its hygroscopic properties—it attracts water molecules from the environment and deeper skin layers, drawing them into the stratum corneum. This increases the water content of the outer skin layers, which can improve hydration and skin texture.

Sodium mannose phosphate is typically used in moisturisers, serums, and hydrating treatments. For best results, apply to damp skin to maximise the humectant effect—the ingredient works more effectively when there is moisture present for it to draw into the skin. It can be layered with other hydrating ingredients and is generally suitable for use both morning and evening.
