Sodium Methyl Palmitoyl Taurate

Sodium methyl palmitoyl taurate is a synthetic surfactant derived from taurine (an amino acid) and palmitic acid (a fatty acid). It belongs to the family of mild cleansing agents commonly used in skincare formulations.In cleansers and face washes, it works to lift oil, dirt and makeup from the skin surface. Unlike harsher surfactants, it is designed to do this while maintaining the skin's natural protective barrier, making it a gentler option for daily use.

As a surfactant, sodium methyl palmitoyl taurate has a structure that allows it to sit at the boundary between oil and water. This property lets it surround oily substances (like sebum and makeup) and suspend them in water, so they rinse away easily.Because it is derived from amino acids, it tends to be milder and less drying than many traditional detergents, which means it irritates the skin barrier less during cleansing.

Use a small amount (roughly a pea-sized amount for facial cleansers) and work into a light foam with water. Massage gently over damp skin for 30–60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. It can be used twice daily as part of a standard cleansing routine.

Sodium methyl palmitoyl taurate is generally well-tolerated and regarded as safe for use in rinse-off products. It is not known to cause significant irritation or sensitisation at typical cosmetic concentrations.
