What Is Sodium Pantothenate?
Sodium pantothenate is the salt form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), a water-soluble B-vitamin found naturally in many foods. In skincare formulations, it functions as a humectant and skin conditioning agent, helping to draw moisture into the skin and maintain hydration.
When applied topically, sodium pantothenate can be converted by the skin into pantothenic acid, which plays a role in synthesising lipids and fatty acids. These lipids are essential components of the skin barrier, the protective layer that prevents water loss and keeps irritants out.
How It Works
Sodium pantothenate draws water from deeper skin layers into the outer layers, acting as a humectant. Once in the skin, it can be metabolised to pantothenic acid, which serves as a precursor to coenzyme A—an enzyme involved in fatty acid and sphingolipid synthesis.
These lipids are vital structural components of skin cell membranes and the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin). By supporting lipid production, pantothenic acid helps maintain barrier integrity, reduce water loss, and support the skin's natural repair processes.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests that formulations containing 1–5% panthenol (a form of pantothenic acid) can significantly reduce transepidermal water loss after 30 days of daily application. Studies also indicate that dexpanthenol-based products may help restore barrier function and reduce inflammation following irritation.
However, most evidence comes from studies using dexpanthenol rather than sodium pantothenate specifically, and formulations often contain multiple ingredients. More research directly comparing different forms and concentrations of pantothenic acid derivatives would help clarify its independent contribution to skin health.
How to Use
Sodium pantothenate is typically found in moisturisers, hydrating serums, and barrier-repair products. It works well alongside other humectants and emollients. For optimal hydration, apply to damp skin and follow with an occlusive moisturiser to seal in moisture. It can be used daily as part of your morning and evening routine.
