What Is Terminalia Arjuna Extract?
Terminalia arjuna extract is derived from the bark of the arjuna tree, a plant used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The extract contains pentacyclic triterpenes — naturally occurring compounds with potential antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties.
In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent, working to support the skin's natural barrier and moisture retention.
How It Works
The pentacyclic triterpenes present in Terminalia arjuna extract are thought to work through multiple pathways. Their antioxidant capacity helps neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS) — unstable molecules created by UV exposure and environmental stress that contribute to skin ageing.
At the cellular level, these compounds appear to influence gene expression in fibroblasts and keratinocytes, potentially triggering increased collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier-protective proteins.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research into Terminalia arjuna extract remains limited but shows some encouraging signs. In vitro and ex vivo studies suggest the extract can improve barrier function, increase hydration, and boost collagen production. A small clinical study (30 participants) measured improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and transepidermal water loss when using a cream containing the extract versus a control.
However, evidence is not extensive. Most studies are preliminary, and larger, well-controlled clinical trials would strengthen confidence in its efficacy for human skin. The ingredient appears generally well-tolerated in research settings, though individual responses may vary.
How to Use
Terminalia arjuna extract is typically found in moisturisers, serums, and creams at relatively low concentrations. As with any new skincare ingredient, introduce it gradually and observe your skin's response over 4-6 weeks. It works well in layered routines alongside other conditioning and barrier-support ingredients.
