What Is Trilinolein?
Trilinolein is a triglyceride—a type of natural oil—derived from plant sources including cannabis fruit and traditional Chinese herbs. It functions as an occlusive skin-conditioning agent, meaning it helps to seal moisture into the skin and maintain its protective barrier.
In cosmetic formulations, trilinolein serves dual purposes: it conditions and softens the skin whilst also helping to control the viscosity (thickness) of products. It remains largely at the skin's surface rather than penetrating deeply, making it suitable for topical skincare use.
How It Works
Trilinolein appears to work through multiple pathways. As an occlusive oil, it creates a protective layer on the skin surface, reducing transepidermal water loss and maintaining hydration. At a cellular level, early research suggests trilinolein may activate autophagy—a cellular 'cleaning' process—via specific signalling pathways, helping skin cells manage oxidative damage.
The ingredient may also help modulate inflammatory and oxidative responses in skin cells, though most evidence for these mechanisms comes from laboratory and cell-based studies rather than human trials.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory research indicates that trilinolein has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and may protect skin cells from UV-induced damage by enhancing their natural defence mechanisms. Studies in cell cultures have shown it can reduce reactive oxygen species and support cell viability under stress conditions.
However, human clinical data on trilinolein remains limited. Most evidence derives from in vitro (cell culture) and animal studies. Further research in human volunteers would help clarify its efficacy and optimal concentrations for skincare applications. The ingredient has been assessed as safe for cosmetic use by safety review panels.

How to Use
Trilinolein is typically incorporated into moisturisers, serums, and balms. As an occlusive ingredient, it works best when applied to damp skin to lock in hydration. It can be used daily as part of a regular skincare routine, either morning or evening depending on the product formulation and your skin's preference.
