Trimyristin

Trimyristin is a triglyceride—a natural compound formed from glycerin and myristic acid, a fatty acid found in plant and animal oils. In skincare, it functions as an occlusive agent and viscosity controller, meaning it helps seal moisture into the skin and adjusts the thickness of formulations.As a glyceryl triester, trimyristin is chemically similar to oils and fats your skin naturally produces. It remains largely at the skin's surface rather than penetrating deeply, making it suitable for topical skincare applications.

Trimyristin works primarily as an emollient by sitting on the skin's surface and forming a protective layer. This occlusive action reduces water evaporation, which is especially helpful for dry or dehydrated skin.In formulations, it also modulates viscosity—essentially thickening or thinning a product as needed—without requiring water or synthetic thickeners, which can be useful in oil-based or mixed systems.

Trimyristin is typically used as part of a complete formulation rather than as a standalone product. It works well in moisturisers, balms, and serums. Because it is occlusive, layering it over a hydrating serum can enhance its effectiveness. If you have very oily skin, use sparingly or opt for lighter formulations to avoid a greasy feel.
