Triolein

Triolein is a naturally occurring triglyceride—a type of fat molecule—commonly found in plant oils such as olive oil. In cosmetic formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent and viscosity controller, meaning it helps soften the skin barrier whilst adjusting the thickness and spreadability of a product.As a lipid, triolein mimics some of the natural oils present in skin, making it compatible with the skin's own moisture-retention mechanisms. It is used sparingly in skincare products, appearing in roughly 0.3% of formulations.

Triolein works primarily through occlusion and emollient action. When applied to skin, it forms a thin, breathable layer that reduces transepidermal water loss—the evaporation of moisture from the skin surface. This helps the skin retain hydration without feeling heavy.Because it is a triglyceride structurally similar to skin lipids, it integrates relatively easily into the skin's lipid matrix, supporting the barrier's natural function rather than simply sitting on top of it.

Triolein is typically used as a minor ingredient in serums, moisturisers, and oils rather than as a standalone product. Since it is present in small concentrations, it works best as part of a broader formulation. Apply to clean, damp skin to maximise hydration retention, and use daily as part of your regular routine unless otherwise directed by the product instructions.

Triolein is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for cosmetic use. Those with a history of fungal acne or sensitivity to plant oils should patch-test first or consult a dermatologist before use.
