Medik8 H.E.O. Mask Review: Two-Step Overnight Hydrating Mask

The Verdict

A well-thought-out two-step system rather than a gimmick: the gel genuinely feels different from the cream, and the barrier-support role is real. Best suited to dry, dehydrated or retinoid-adjusting skin needing an occasional overnight reset — not a nightly staple for every skin type.

What is the Medik8 H.E.O. Mask?

H.E.O. stands for Humectants, Emollients and Occlusives — the three ingredient categories that, together, make up how a moisturiser actually works. Rather than blending all three into one cream, Medik8 has split the routine into two separate steps applied back to back: a cooling gel first, then a richer cream on top. The idea is to let each ingredient category do its job without one diluting the other, then leave both on overnight.

It comes as two 50ml tubes in one box, positioned as an occasional overnight treatment rather than a daily moisturiser swap.

Who it's for — and who should skip it

This is aimed at dry, dehydrated or sensitised skin that needs an intensive top-up rather than a daily rebalance. It's also positioned as a support product for anyone starting or increasing a vitamin A routine, where extra barrier reinforcement can help ease the adjustment period — worth pairing with a review like our Medik8 Crystal Retinal review if that's your situation. Oily or acne-prone skin that doesn't run dry is unlikely to need a two-step overnight mask on top of an existing routine — a single hydrating serum, such as the one covered in our Medik8 Hydr8 B5 review, is a lighter starting point. Anyone with a known sensitivity to any of the listed ingredients should patch test first, as with any new skincare product.

How to use it

Apply as the last step of an evening routine, after cleansing and any serums (including vitamin A, if used). Smooth a small amount of Step 1 (the gel) over face and neck, avoiding the eye area, and let it sink in for a couple of minutes. Follow with Step 2 (the cream) over the same area, then leave both on overnight and cleanse as normal in the morning. Medik8 suggests using it 2–3 times a week, or whenever skin needs extra help — after travel, in colder weather, or during a period of increased dryness.

The ingredients, in plain English

Step 1's job is hydration. Multi-weight hyaluronic acid (see our hyaluronic acid glossary entry) draws water to the skin at several depths, while glycerin and the Natural Moisturising Factor blend (urea, sodium PCA, amino acids) help pull in and hold onto moisture. Glyceryl glucoside is included to help support the skin's own water-channelling processes. Blue Sea Kale extract is an antioxidant-rich botanical that's there to support the skin's environment rather than deliver an active treatment effect on its own.

Step 2 shifts to sealing that hydration in. Squalane (see our squalane glossary entry) is a lightweight, skin-identical oil that softens and cushions, while Ceramide NP (see our ceramides glossary entry) is one of the lipids the skin barrier is naturally built from, helping to fill in the gaps where moisture escapes. Dimethicone sits on top as an occlusive, forming a breathable layer that reduces water loss overnight without feeling heavy. Linoleic acid and allantoin round out the cream, supporting barrier lipids and general skin comfort respectively.

Together the two steps are built to help improve the appearance of dryness, dullness and the look of fine lines caused by dehydration — this is a hydration and barrier-support formula, not a treatment for wrinkles caused by other factors such as sun damage or loss of elasticity.

FAQs

Can I use the H.E.O. Mask every night?

Medik8 positions it as a 2–3 times weekly treatment rather than a nightly moisturiser. If your skin tolerates it well and needs the extra hydration, more frequent use is a personal call, but it's designed to sit alongside — not replace — your usual moisturiser on other nights.

Do I still need a separate night cream?

On the nights you use H.E.O. Mask, no — it's designed to be the final step of your routine, replacing your usual night cream. On other evenings, go back to your normal moisturiser.

Is it safe to use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

We don't advise on pregnancy or breastfeeding safety for any product on this site. If this applies to you, please contact our team and we can help you find suitable options.

Verdict

The two-step format is a genuine point of difference rather than packaging dressed up as innovation — the gel and cream feel distinct on skin, and using them in sequence makes sense given what each is formulated to do. It's a good fit for dry or dehydrated skin, and a sensible addition for anyone building barrier resilience while introducing a retinoid. It's not designed as an everyday moisturiser replacement, so go in expecting an occasional intensive treatment rather than a new nightly habit.
