Same cleanser in all four. Same sunscreen in all four. What varies is a thin treatment serum at step two and a richer treatment at step three. In two of the four, step three is Hydra-Cool Serum, which is a serum, not a cream. Steps one and four: decide once, then forget them

The cleanser choice is small. Cleansing Complex is the default across every collection, a clear gel that removes make-up and stays mild enough for sensitive skin. Eclipse SPF 50+ and Extreme Protect SPF 40 are both mineral, using transparent titanium dioxide plus micronised zinc oxide, with vitamin E, and both are water-resistant. Extreme Protect SPF 30 is a hybrid, using microfine zinc oxide alongside organic filters. Should step two use one anchor or two?

This is the step people over-buy. iS Clinical's step-two serums fall into two families that do genuinely different things. Owning one from each is a legitimate routine. Owning two from the same family is not.

The exfoliating family. Active Serum is the brand's best seller and works by controlled botanical exfoliation. iS Clinical is upfront that it produces a cooling, tingling sensation on application. Can step three double as your moisturiser?

Three products cover almost every version of this step, and they are not interchangeable:

• Hydra-Cool Serum: lightweight, hydrating and calming in feel, oil-free. This is the step three for blemish-prone and for reactive skin, which is why it turns up in both Pure Clarity and Pure Calm.
• Youth Complex: a richer treatment gel for the appearance of lines and firmness. Step three in Pure Renewal.

Do you still need a cream on top? That depends entirely on which step three you own. If your step three is Youth Complex or Brightening Complex, probably not — both have enough substance to moisturise on their own. If your step three is Hydra-Cool Serum, you probably do. Hydra-Cool is a humectant serum, built on water, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and centella extract, with menthol for the cooling sensation. Active Serum is the one that stays in the evening. Start a new exfoliating serum at two or three applications a week and build up, not twice daily from day one. If two serums go on in the same session, the exfoliating one goes first — thinner texture, and it's the one that needs contact with clean skin.
