What Is Arachis Hypogaea (Peanut) Oil?

Oil pressed from peanuts, high in oleic acid. CosIng classifies it as occlusive, which places it among the richer, more protective oils. Peanut is a major allergen, and EU cosmetic law caps peanut protein in the oil and its derivatives at 0.5 parts per million for exactly that reason. That limit exists because sensitisation through skin is the concern, so anyone with a peanut allergy should take medical advice about any product containing it rather than relying on a patch test.

How It Works

An occlusive works by forming a barrier over the skin that physically slows water evaporating from it. That is a different mechanism from a humectant, which attracts water, and from an emollient, which fills gaps to smooth the surface. Being oleic-heavy, peanut oil is cushioning and slow to absorb — well suited to dry or weathered skin, and generally too heavy for the face if you are oily or congestion-prone.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on peanut oil's chemistry shows it contains measurable antioxidant components, and stability studies indicate these are preserved depending on processing conditions. Evidence confirms its use as a skin-conditioning agent and its capacity to enhance absorption of other compounds in formulations.

However, dedicated clinical studies examining its direct efficacy for specific skin concerns in cosmetic applications are limited. Most evidence comes from ingredient safety assessments and chemical composition analyses rather than controlled skincare trials. Further research would strengthen our understanding of its benefits in typical skincare concentrations.

How to Use

Peanut oil is typically used at low concentrations within formulated products rather than as a standalone treatment. If using a product containing this oil, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Because it may enhance absorption of other actives, be mindful of what other ingredients are present in your formulation, particularly if you are using potent actives that require careful introduction.

Safety & Precautions

Peanut oil is generally well-tolerated in topical skincare applications. However, individuals with peanut allergies should be cautious, as skin contact with peanut-derived ingredients may potentially trigger a reaction in sensitive individuals.
