What Is Betaine?
Betaine — listed on ingredient labels simply as Betaine, and known chemically as trimethylglycine — is a small, water-soluble molecule used in skincare as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent. It was first isolated from sugar beet, Beta vulgaris, which is where the name comes from, and the material used in cosmetics is still commonly obtained from sugar beet processing, though a synthetic version is also produced.
It is not purely a plant ingredient, though. Betaine occurs naturally in the human body and in skin cells, where it belongs to a family of small molecules called osmolytes: compounds that living cells accumulate to manage their internal water balance. That dual identity — familiar to skin, and easy to formulate with — is why it turns up so widely. You will find it in cleansers, micellar waters, toners, essences, serums, moisturisers, sheet masks, shampoos and conditioners. Formulators like it because it adds hydration without the tackiness some humectants leave behind, and it can also be used to condition hair and help control the viscosity of a formula.
One point of confusion is worth clearing up: betaine is not the same thing as cocamidopropyl betaine, which is a foaming surfactant with a very different profile. Check that the INCI list reads simply "Betaine".

How It Works
Betaine is a zwitterion: it carries a positive and a negative charge on the same small molecule, which makes it intensely water-loving while leaving it chemically unreactive. Its charged groups attract and hold water molecules tightly around them, and that is the basis of its humectant action — it helps the surface layers hold on to water, and, in humid conditions, take some up from the air, so skin looks less dull and feels less tight.
What sets it apart from a straightforward humectant is its second role as an osmolyte, or compatible solute — skin cells take it up through dedicated transport proteins, so it works from inside the cell as well as on the surface, and without disturbing the proteins and enzymes around it. Betaine is also known to help stabilise proteins in solution, and formulators use it in cleansers for that reason: in practice, a wash containing it tends to feel less stripping and leave skin feeling more comfortable.
Beyond that, be cautious about what is actually established. Laboratory work on cultured skin cells has explored how osmolytes such as betaine influence junction proteins involved in barrier function, and some early research has looked at the appearance of uneven tone. Both remain preliminary; human evidence for topical betaine beyond hydration and mildness is still limited.

How to Use
Betaine is a supporting ingredient rather than a headline active, so the aim is to have it present and well-partnered, not to chase a high percentage.
- Typical levels. Leave-on formulas generally use it at low single-digit percentages; the highest level in the Cosmetic Ingredient Review's use survey, around 8.7%, was reported in a rinse-off hair product rather than a face product. Brands rarely disclose the figure, so judge by where it sits in the INCI list.
- No pH fuss. As a zwitterion it is stable across the pH range used in skincare, so it sits happily in low-pH vitamin C or acid formulas as well as neutral creams.
- Frequency. Morning and evening is fine — nothing to build up to, no adjustment period.
- Apply to damp skin and follow with a moisturiser containing emollients or occlusives — humectants perform far better with something on top, particularly in indoor heating or cold British weather.
- Good partners. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, urea, sodium PCA and ceramides.
- Sensitive skin. Seek it out in cleansers if foaming washes leave your skin feeling tight.
Safety & Precautions
Betaine has an excellent tolerance record. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review assessed betaine in 2018, as part of its review of the alkyl betaines, and concluded these ingredients are safe in the present practices of use and concentration when formulated to be non-irritating. Reports of irritation or allergy from betaine itself are uncommon. It is not an acid or an exfoliant, so there is no peeling, purging or sun sensitivity, and it suits dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin.
Betaine is also not cocamidopropyl betaine — that surfactant is a recognised contact allergen, and a reaction to it does not mean you will react to betaine. Any finished product can still irritate because of what else is in it, so patch test on the inner forearm and stop if stinging or redness persists.
