Esculetin

Esculetin is a naturally occurring dihydroxy coumarin, a type of organic compound primarily extracted from the bark and twigs of Fraxinus rhynchophylla, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent.The ingredient has been studied for its potential to modulate inflammatory and immune responses in the skin, with research suggesting it may help reduce the symptoms associated with inflammatory skin conditions.

Esculetin appears to work by influencing the body's immune response at a cellular level. Research indicates it may promote the activity of regulatory T cells—immune cells that help calm excessive inflammatory responses—whilst simultaneously reducing the production of inflammatory signalling molecules (cytokines) in skin tissue.Its antioxidant properties may also help protect skin cells from damage caused by free radicals, though the precise mechanisms by which topical application translates to these systemic effects require further investigation.
